News: La Cala’s New Captains begin their terms of office

The new Captains of La Cala Resort’s golf club have begun their terms of office and are enjoying taking the reins at one of the busiest members’ clubs on the Costa del Sol. Danny Rees and Jenny Chesterton say one of their priorities will be to encourage all the newer members of the club to take part in the weekly competitions and the many social events that are held annually. “There are many new members who have bought properties in the resort and they would like to encourage them to become active members of the club. Many may feel that they aren’t good enough to join in, but every weekend there are fun competitions which are usually team events and they would all be more than welcome to come along and get to know the other members. Most of the members do not take the weekend competitions too seriously,” they say.

Danny should be well aware of his responsibilities for the year as his wife, Carol, was Lady Captain in 2006. A 12-handicapper, Danny is Welsh but spent his first 10 years travelling the globe as his father was in the British army. From the age of 10 he lived in Blackpool, England. A qualified accountant, he sold his accountancy practice to enter the commercial world in local advertising. He set up a group of companies in 1990 and sold them in 2000 after a fairytale ten years. Two years later he moved permanently to the Costa del Sol. His three adult children live in the UK and Canada. “I’ve been playing golf for many years. I took up the game after I stopped playing football and squash. I was a member of Blackpool North Shore GC and De Vere Blackpool but now I play all my golf in La Cala. We did check out the opposition but thought the friendly atmosphere here at La Cala was fantastic. With three courses to choose from you never get bored,” he says.

Jenny and her husband, Ron, retired to Spain from the UK in 2006 with the idea that playing golf in the sun was more appealing than the UK. Jenny and Ron have two children, Paul and Clare. Paul lives in London where he is an actor and drama teacher, whilst their daughter Clare and son-in-law Mark live in Fuengirola. Jenny is much travelled as husband Ron worked in the computer and mobile phone industries in many different countries. Jenny worked in the Royal Holloway University of London Library and put her skills to good use when she opened a members’ library in La Cala. Having taken up golf 11 years ago , she was previously a member of Windlesham GC in Surrey. “Having three courses on our doorstep at La Cala was definitely a factor in deciding to buy a property in the resort. My handicap was 35 when we came here and I dropped to 20 at one stage. I also love nature and wildlife, so this is an ideal location for me,” she explains.

We wish Danny and Jenny the best of luck for their year in charge of the golf club in Spain’s largest golf resort.
